COLOMBO – Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Levan Dzhagaryan, has been requested by the Government of Sri Lanka to provide details of Sri Lankan soldiers engaged in the Russia-Ukraine war along with a list of those killed and the repatriation of their remains.
Defence Secretary Kamal Gunaratne told reporters on Wednesday (15), that the government had asked for details of the soldiers engaged in the war, especially those killed, so the families could be apprised about the fate of their loved ones.
Gunaratne said a request had also been made to repatriate injured soldiers so they could be cared for in the army hospital. Several soldiers who had sustained injuries are reported to be receiving treatment in several hospitals in Russia
He said the ambassador had also been asked to look into repatriating the remains of soldiers killed in combat so that at least their ashes could be given to the bereaving families
Gunaratne said the ambassador had promised to look into the request.
Families of soldiers who left the country to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war have also been asked to provide details of their loved ones, so their whereabouts and status could be monitored.
