Sri Lanka sees 15% increase in water consumption amid arid conditions
COLOMBO – Water consumption in Sri Lanka has increased 15% in recent weeks due to prevailing dry weather conditions, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) said on Wednesday (13).
Anoja Kaluarachchi, deputy general manager of the NWSDB, said that the country has been experiencing dry weather for about nine weeks, and the water level of rivers and reservoirs has dropped, impacting water intake for distribution.
Kaluarachchi said due to current conditions, piped water consumers living in higher ground and those living in outermost areas of water projects will experience low water pressure.
She added that they have not implemented planned water cuts in any area yet but requested people to use water sparingly.
The meteorological department has warned there will be no significant rainfall until May, and the NWSDB needs to manage water supply till then, Kaluarachchi said.
