COLOMBO – The Public Utility Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) announced it had approved the reduction in electricity tariff by 21.9% with effect from midnight Monday (4).
In an across-the-board reduction, the tariff for hotels and the industrial sector has been slashed by 18%, religious places by 33%, and the State sector by 22%.
In reduction based on usage, unit prices for those consuming below 30 units a month have been reduced by 33%, 31-60 units by 28%, and 61-90 units by 30%. For those using between 91 and 180 units, the per unit price has been reduced by 24%, while for those using above 180 units has been reduced by 18%.
The PUCSL said the final decision on the tariff revision was reached after reviewing the proposals and cost data submitted by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB, in accordance with the provisions of Section 30 of the Sri Lanka Electricity Act No. 20 of 2009 and the provisions of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka.
The CEB had proposed to reduce tariffs by 3.4% last January and then by 16% in a revised proposal presented on February 22. The commission decided to reduce the tariffs by 21.9%, considering suggestions made during the public consultation and reviews carried out by the Commission on the cost data submitted by the CEB.
