COLOMBO – Sri Lanka can expect significant rain only in mid-April, Director General of Meteorology Athula Karunanayake said on Monday (12) during a TV talk show on prevailing weather.
He added that prevailing high temperatures will persist until then.
He warned that children, athletes, military personnel, labourers and others who are exposed to the sun must be vigilant against life-threatening dehydration until mid-April.
Karunanayake said there might be slight sporadic rains in Uva and Eastern Provinces, but these rains will have no impact on water levels in reservoirs or alleviate the high temperature.
According to the meteorological department, the highest temperature in the 24 hours that ended at 8 a.m. on Monday was reported in the capital Colombo at 35 degrees Celsius.
The department added that most parts of Sri Lanka have a humidity of over 80%.
