COLOMBO – All Sri Lankans returning from abroad after working in the agriculture sector will be given two acres of land to develop their own agri-business, Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, Manusha Nanayakkara said on Tuesday (2).
Addressing a meeting in Colombo, Nanayakkara, said these individuals have been exposed to the latest agricultural technologies and techniques, and their knowledge needs to be used for the development of the country.
The Sri Lankan government wants to encourage 10% of Sri Lankans to be entrepreneurs, the minister said, adding that his ministry will make concerted efforts to promote it in 2024.
Over 275,000 Sri Lankans had gone for foreign jobs by the end of November 2023, the country’s Foreign Minister Ali Sabry told Parliament in December 2023.
