Civic rights under spotlight after ex-President, Fin Min, CB, officials faulted by court
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka Parliament should take up the question of civic rights of individuals faulted by the Supreme Court for triggering an economic crisis and default, opposition legislator Harsha de Silva said.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday (14) decided ex-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Presidential Secretary P. B. Jayasundera, Treasury Secretary S. R. Attygalle, Central Bank Governors W. .D Lakshman and Nivard Cabraal had infringed fundamental rights helping drive the country to default.
“I am asking from this Parliament what is this Parliament’s opinion about the civic rights of the persons who did this deed,” de Silva questioned, telling the parliament that the civil rights of the persons who dragged the country to this state have to be discussed.
In addition to individuals the Monetary Board of the central bank was also named.
Sri Lanka engaged in the most aggressive deployment of ‘macro-economic policy’ from 2020 adding tax cuts to rate cuts making it impossible to maintain the exchange rate or repay foreign debt.
