COLOMBO – Sri Lanka government has requested the general public to update their mobile phone SIM (subscriber identity module) card registration and ensure that the details are accurate, the Department of Government Information said, ahead of a move to introduce a unique identity card to facilitate digitalization in taxation and other government services
Sri Lanka has nearly eight million more registered mobile phone numbers than its 22 million population as some people have more than one mobile SIM card registered under their names.
“If there are other SIM cards registered under their identity cards that they do not know, they should immediately validate those SIM cards,” the Department of Government Information said in a statement.
“If they do not do so and make any misuse of that SIM card, they have to bear the responsibility for it and they have to spend their time, effort and money to prove its accuracy.”
The DGI advised to dial #132# to check the details of individual SIM cards and call customer care service of mobile phone service companies to check if there had been any additional SIM cards registered under individual national identity card numbers.
“If the SIM card that you are using has not been registered in your name, you should contact the telephone company that owns the SIM card that you are using and get it registered,” the DGI said.
The new move comes ahead of the government’s digitization process to introduce a unique identity card which will be used in future taxation and government services.
The government has said such digitization could boost the tax revenue “significantly” as it will curb corruption by minimizing physical meetings with tax officials.
