Sri Lanka villagers mail electricity bills to State Minister
COLOMBO – A group of residents in Ambalangoda, in Sri Lanka’s South, have mailed their electricity bills to government MP Sanath Nishantha who is said to have settled the outstanding electricity bills of Namal Rajapaksa, MP and son of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, a privately owned television network reported.
“We saw in the media that you had settled MP Rajapaksa’s bills. Please also settle the bills of these poor daily-wage earners,” one resident told the channel, which showed footage of the residents posting a collection of their bills to the MP, during its daily news telecast.
MP Nishantha, who is said to be a friend of Rajapaksa, serves as State Minister of Water Supply.
Nishantha told the media on Monday (2) that he paid 2,682,246.57 rupees to the state-run Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) on behalf of MP Rajapaksa.
“There was conversation on social media that a bill due for electricity used at MP Rajapaksa’s wedding ceremony had not been settled. If anyone has not paid something, I believe it is a duty to pay it off,” the MP said, adding that he settled Rajapaksa’s bill in his own private capacity.
According to the state minister, he was moved to pay the large sum of money because he could not let people speak poorly of the “innocent man that is Mahinda Rajapaksa” – former president and MP Namal Rajapkasa’s father.
Meanwhile, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara has said that a power tariff revision may be necessary to cover costs as the Victoria, Rantambe, Randenigala and Samanalawewa reservoirs have not received adequate rainfall in order to generate hydro power.
