COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers have approved two proposals by President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as Minister of Women’s Affairs to pass new legislation to ensure equality in gender socialization and to establish a national women’s commission.
A statement from the Government Information Department said on Tuesday (12) that the Ministry of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment, headed by Wickremesinghe, is taking measures to minimize a gender imbalance in socialization.
Gender socialization is the process of teaching individuals, young and old, how to behave according to gender roles, socially constructed ideas of what it means to be one’s assigned gender.
At the weekly cabinet meeting held on September 5, the ministers had green-lit the drafting of fresh legal provisions with the objective of “empowering equality of gender socialization and women”.
Wickremesinghe, in his capacity as the Minister of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment, had then submitted the draft bill prepared by the Legal Draftsman and, at the cabinet meeting held on Monday (11), the ministers had approved it.
At last week’s meeting, the cabinet had granted approval to establish an independent commission under the title of the National Women’s Commission to make recommendations to parliament through the subject minister in mediating in issues related to providing leadership for women’s rights as well as ensuring equality of gender socialization.
In this regard, another draft bill prepared by the Legal Draftsman presented by Wickremesinghe was approved by the cabinet, the statement said.
