Local polls: Finance ministry will honour court order, says state minister
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s finance ministry will honour a recent Supreme Court order that directed the ministry secretary and the Attorney General not to withhold funds allocated for local government elections, State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.
Siyambalapitiya told reporters on Saturday (4) that everyone is obligated to respect the decision of the courts, and that as the finance ministry, they too will honour that verdict and act accordingly.
“I see no issue with that,” he said, adding that the ministry will have to direct the funds accordingly.
The Supreme Court on Friday (3) issued an interim order preventing the Secretary Ministry of Finance and the Attorney General from withholding funds allocated for the now-postponed local government elections.
The apex court issued the verdict after taking up a petition filed by main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) general secretary and MP, Ranjith Madduma Bandara.
