Govt. to appoint cabinet subcommittee on reconciliation chaired by president
COLOMBO – On the heels of a tough new United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution, Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers on Monday (17) approved a proposal to appoint a cabinet subcommittee on reconciliation chaired by the president.
A statement from the Department of Government Information on Tuesday (18) said the proposal, made by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, seeks to promote reconciliation between the “various sections of the population in Sri Lanka and to propose solutions to the problems faced by the people regarding resettlement, land and missing persons after the conflict in the North and East”.
The subcommittee will comprise Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda, Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and Foreign Minister Ali Sabry.
The announcement came in the wake of the latest UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka that was passed with 20 votes for and seven against, with 20 member states abstaining.
Sri Lanka has rejected the resolution, opting to carry out its own, home-grown mechanisms to achieve reconciliation.
