Sri Lanka declares Sep 19 Govt. holiday to mourn Queen Elizabeth II
COLOMBO– Sri Lanka has declared next Monday (19), already declared a national day of mourning, a government holiday to mark the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, which will be held that day at Westminster Abbey.
Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration & Home Affairs, M. P. K. Mayadunne announced the holiday in a statement issued on Tuesday (13). “The government has declared September 19, 2022, the day of the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, who was the head of the Commonwealth and reigned as Queen of Ceylon from 1952 to 1972, as a special holiday for government offices to extend condolence.
“This should not cause any hindrance to the delivery of essential services of the government,” Mayadunne added..
President Ranil Wickremesinghe had earlier directed the Ministry of Public Administrations & Home Affairs to declare September 19 a day of mourning in view of the passing of the queen.
The president’s office also announced on Monday that Wickremesinghe will be attending the queen’s funeral.
