Sri Lanka offers condolences over Queen Elizabeth II’s death
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe Thursday (8) offered his “deepest condolences” over the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the monarch of the former British colony for the first two decades of her reign.
“Deepest condolences to the Royal family, government and people of the UK on the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II,” Wickremesinghe said in a statement.
Elizabeth II reigned as queen of Ceylon, as the island nation was known, until it became a republic and changed its name in 1972.
She visited Sri Lanka twice, travelling in 1954 to the central city of Kandy and the tea-growing mountain region of Nuwara Eliya, once home to a number of British-run plantations.
Her second visit in 1981 included a stop to view the construction of the country’s largest hydro-electricity dam, named for Queen Victoria.
