Former Maldives president to coordinate relief efforts for Sri Lanka
COLOMBO – Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday (19) appointed former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed to coordinate relief efforts for Sri Lanka globally amid an economic crisis.
The Prime Minister’s Office said that following discussions between Nasheed and Wickremesinghe in Colombo, Nasheed offered to assist Sri Lanka in securing relief for the country from foreign nations.
The Sri Lankan prime minister accepted the former Maldives president’s offer and appointed him to coordinate the relief efforts on behalf of Sri Lanka.
Wickremesinghe thanked Nasheed for his support for Sri Lanka during the economic crisis, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Sri Lanka has been facing a severe economic crisis which has caused difficulties to people’s daily life and subsequently led to recent social and political instability in the South Asian country.
