COLOMBO– The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology on Sunday 25) issued a strong winds and rough sea areas advisory for deep and shallow sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Colombo and Hambantota, from Puttalam to Kankasanturai via Mannar, for the 24-hour period ending at 2:30 p.m. Monday (12).
Backed by an ‘amber’ alert, the advisory warned of rough seas and wind speeds increasing up to 60 kmph in the deep and shallow sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and from Puttalam to Kankasanturai via Mannar and urged naval and fishing communities to be vigilant.
The Met Department also called for vigilance due to active south-west monsoon conditions over Sri Lanka, and warned of very strong winds gusting up to 60kmph over the western slopes of the central hills, in the Northern, North Central and North-Western Provinces and in Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.
The weather forecast issued at 1:00 p.m. Sunday said the warning was valid till 9:00 Monday (26).
