Minister to propose military training for all Sri Lankans over 18
COLOMBO– Sri Lanka’s Minister of Public Security, Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara, is set to submit to Parliament a proposal to provide military training for all citizens over 18 years of age.
Weerasekara told the privately owned TV channel on Monday (18) , the objective of his proposal was to use military training for personality development and to create a law abiding society.
“Nobody should fear the idea of military training. It’s with military training that a man can learn to stand up straight and look a person in the eye. It builds personality, and instills leadership qualities, respect for the law, discipline, and a sense of responsibility. These are the expected outcomes. Nobody should be apprehensive of it,” he said.
The minister said the proposal is to mandate military training for “young people”, both male and female, but did not specify an upper age limit.
“It is with such training that we may be able to build a law abiding society,” he added.
