Landslide warnings as heavy rains batter East and Central Hills
COLOMBO – Heavy rains and strong winds battering Sri Lanka’s Eastern and Central areas have caused floods and landslides, the country’s Disaster Management Centre reported on Tuesday (22) afternoon.
It said the ferocity of the annual North Eastern monsoon was in full spate but no serious incidents or loss of life had been reported as yet.
Pradeep Kodipilli, spokesman for the Disaster Management Centre said the Matale region had received heavy rain and some landslides had been reported.
“However no displacements or injuries have been reported,” he added.
The Manampitiya Bridge was seeing high water levels and officials are hoping the water levels will ease off, he said.
The Meteorological Department on Tuesday forecast heavy rains of more than 100mm for the Eastern and Uva Provinces with the districts of Mullaitivu, Matale, Polonnaruwa, Kilinochchi and Nuwara Eliya districts most affected.
