COLOMBO – The beleaguered United National Party (UNP) is yet to decide who will fill the single National List seat it won at the last parliamentary general election, a party spokesman said on Monday (23).
He said at a party senior members meeting at Sirikotha on Monday, some had requested Party Leader, former prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, to take the National List seat but he had declined. “The Leader said a person who is already on the National List or another candidate should be appointed,” the spokesman said, adding that Party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had offered his resignation but he had been asked to stay on.
The UNP was trashed in the last parliamentary elections failing to win a single seat electorally, the biggest defeat it ever suffered in its storied history.
