COLOMBO – Opposition Member of Parliament, former minister Eran Wickremeratne had been summoned to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday (16) and questioned over statements he made at a recent press conference regarding the safety of Easter Sunday bomber Zahran Hashim’s wife.
Wickremeratne said he was questioned for four hours over comments he had made over the need for persons accused of crimes to be available to testify in courts in future hearings.
The Police Media Division, when asked for comments on the former minister’s claims, directed the query to DIG Ajith Rohana, who did not respond.
Wickremeratne said he was questioned by CID detectives about his statement, particularly with regard to the safety of the wife of Hashim, leader of the National Thawheeth Jama’ath, the mastermind of the multiple suicide bombing that killed some 270 people in churches and hotels on Easter Sunday in 2019,
Drawing attention the killing of drug kingpin Makandure Madush in a shootout, which also led to the loss of valuable information with regard to the drug trade in the country, Wickremeratne told a press briefing he was concerned about the fate of Zahran’s wife, and said she should be safeguarded as she may have clues about the mastermind behind the attacks.
