Several areas in Kegalle, Kurunegala districts isolated following COVID-19 spike
COLOMBO–Several areas in the Kegalle and Kurunegala districts were placed under isolation on Monday (2), due to a surge in the number testing positive for the novel coronavirus from the two districts.
The National Operational Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) in a statement issued late Monday night announced that Hemmathagama, Mawanella and Bulathkohupitiya police jurisdictions, Galigamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha area in the Kegalle district and Giriulla police jurisdiction in the Kurunegala district have been declared as isolated regions with immediate effect. It said the isolation had been carried out on the recommendation of Director General of Health Services, but didn’t give any details as to the number of cases detected from the two districts. However, local authorities in the Kegalle district, which has been seeing spikes in coronavirus cases were reported to have appealed for curfew and border restrictions as COVID-19 case spiked. Hotels in the area have already been ordered closed
District Secretary Mahinda Weerasooriya said Kegalle district had up to Monday night recorded 104 coronavirus cases, with 26 in Mawanella, 14 in Bulathkohupitiya, 15 in Keglla and 12 in Dehiowita, District Secretary Mahinda Weerasooriya said.
“We have received requests from local authorities to impose curfew,” Weerasooriya told a local television channel on Monday, adding that they had requested for assistance from the National Committee and the Governor (of the Province) and were awaiting a reply.
He said there were requests to restrict border movements and that all hotels and lodging places within the district have been asked to close and weekly markets in the district will also not be held..
