COLOMBO– The Sri Lankan government on Monday (5) dismissed social media claims of a possible countrywide curfew effective Tuesday (6) as ‘false’, saying it had had no plan and no need to enforce a countrywide lockdown.
Director-General, Government Information Department, Nalaka Kaluwewa, in a statement released Monday evening, said rumours circulating on social media that the country was going into an island-wide curfew were false. “We urge the public to be calm and exercise discretion,” Kaluwewa said reassuring the public the government would keep them informed of the situation as it develops.
He said all decisions taken by the government, which the public should know about, will be publicized through official channels of communication, adding, there were no plan to close down any institutions or impose general curfews.
