COLOMBO – A returnee from Dubai died while undergoing quarantine in Nuwara Eliya, but officials ruled out COVID-19 as the cause of death.
The 56-year old man had tested negative for Covid, but was undergoing mandatory quarantine at a hotel in Nuwara Eliya.
According Colonel Vijitha Hettiarachchi, spokesperson for the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19, the returnee had been admitted to hospital to be treated for an infection on his leg, which had been wounded while he was in Dubai.
The deceased, a father of one and a resident of Kotugoda, Ja-ela and had worked as a Human Resource Officer in a private company in Dubai but had resigned with the hope of coming back to Sri Lanka amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. He had returned to Sri Lanka on September 1.
Diagnosed as a heart patient and a diabetic, the returnee had been admitted to the Nuwara Eliya Hospital,to be treated for the infected wound upon his arrival.
He had passed away on September 2 and the funeral took place in Nuwara Eliya on Monday (7), under COVID-19 guidelines, with the participation of his family members along with the hospital director and Public Health Inspectors.
