COLOMBO – Sri Lanka reached yet another grim milestone on Tuesday (Aug 31) as the COVID-19 fatality count crossed the 9000-mark, with 194 deaths reported, taking the death toll to 9185. Sri Lanka crossed the 1000 mark on May 18, less than four months ago, and in an indication of how deadly the virus has become, it took just five days for the toll to move up from 8000 to 9000, with Monday (30) recording 216 deaths, the highest number of fatalities in a single day.
Director-General of Health Services, confirming the deaths, said three of the deceased were under the age 30, while 146 were above the age of 60 and 45 were between the ages 30 and 59.
Tuesday also saw the Covid-spike continuing with 4221 new cases confirmed, taking Sri Lanka’s virus count to 440,302 with 56,961 active cases receiving medical care at hospitals, treatment centres, and homes.
