COLOMBO – A medical doctor attached to the Welikada Prison Hospital, in Colombo, has lodged a police complaint against detained MP Rishad Bathuideen for allegedly threatening his life.
Prison Department spokesman Chandana Ekanayake told reporters on Monday (23) the doctor had been treating inmates at a designated area of the Magazine Prison in Borella when the MP had forced his way in.
The doctor had asked Bathuideen to wait outside, said Ekanayake, to which the angered MP had allegedly insulted the doctor and threatened his life.
The doctor had made formal complaints, verbally and in writing, to the Commissioner of Prisons, the Inspector General of Police, Director General of Health Services and the Secretary, Ministry of Health.
Both the Prisons Department and the police will independently investigate the incident, Ekanayake said.
Bathiudeen and his brother Riyaj were arrested on April 24 for alleged links to the 2019 Easter Sunday bombers and have been in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The former minister is also in the centre of a controversy surrounding a 16-year-old domestic aide employed at his residence who burnt to death in July.
