Foreign Ministry to evacuate Sri Lankans stranded in Afghanistan
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday (15) said it was working with international partners to facilitate the return of Sri Lankan nationals in Afghanistan if they wish to return.
Clarifying its position with regard to the current situation in Afghanistan and the ongoing efforts to evacuate Sri Lankan nationals, it said the Sri Lanka Embassy in Afghanistan, currently functioning from a hotel in Kabul, was is in possession of details of 43 Sri Lankan nationals in the country.
It noted that the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLBFE) also had more details and that Sri Lankan nationals resident in Afghanistan at present mostly work for the United Nations, international organizations, NATO military bases and private companies.
The Foreign Ministry said the embassy in Kabul currently does not have any Sri Lankan nationals present and is manned by one local staff member, but assured the ministry remains apprised of the situation and will make every effort to ensure the safe return of Sri Lankan nationals, if they wish to return.
