COLOMBO – The cabinet this week approved a proposal by the Minister of Justice to recognize divorces, marriage annulments or judicial separations of expatriate Sri Lankans in residing countries.
The Family Law Advisory Committee appointed by the minister has recommended that legal provisions be made to accept divorces, annulments, and judicial separations that have taken place abroad, the cabinet office said in a statement on Tuesday (10).
At present Sri Lanka does not accept marital cases of Sri Lankans filed in foreign countries, requiring them to file a fresh case in Sri Lanka again.
“Because of this, those parties have to face difficulties,” the statement said, adding that Cabinet has approved a proposal by Minister of Justice, Ali Sabry to instruct the legal draftsman to prepare a bill to enact legal provisions for the recognition of such divorces, annulments and judicial separations in foreign countries.
