COLOMBO – Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya on Saturday (27) inaugurated the first-ever National Scout Poson Zone in Colombo, an initiative organized by the Sri Lanka Scout Association to mark the annual Poson religious festival.
The event, being held in line with the vision of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been organized with the coordination of the Presidential Secretariat and the support of both public and private sector institutions.
The opening ceremony included religious observances and blessings led by Venerable Dr Kirinde Assaji Nayake Thera, Chief Incumbent of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple, following which the prime minister officially declared the Poson Zone open after receiving a commemorative casket bearing the event’s message.
Addressing the gathering, Amarasuriya underscored the importance of expanding the Scout movement within Sri Lanka’s school system, describing it as an important platform for nurturing civic responsibility and community service among young people.
She also praised the role played by Scouts in organizing religious and social service initiatives, saying such programs strengthen volunteerism and social cohesion.
The Poson Zone, extending from Lake House Roundabout to the Sri Lanka Police Headquarters, including the Sri Lanka Scout Headquarters on Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha in Colombo, will be open to the public until 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday (30).
Saturday’s opening ceremony was attended by Sri Lanka Scout Association President Ransiri Perera, Chief Scout Commissioner and Attorney-at-Law Manoj Nanayakkara, commanders of the armed forces and police, senior government officials, and invited guests.
Poson, one of the most significant Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, commemorates the introduction of Buddhism to the island by Arahat Mahinda Thera during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa in the third century BCE.
