COLOMBO – A week-long specialized Textile Training and Capacity Building Program in India for a 30-member delegation of Sri Lankan handloom and powerloom craftsmen concluded on Saturday (15). Representing two key segments of Sri Lanka’s textile industry, the delegation participated in intensive technical and hands-on sessions aimed at upgrading skills, deepening industry expertise, and fostering innovation to strengthen the sector’s global competitiveness.
The initiative follows the commitment made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025, where he announced 700 customised annual training slots for Sri Lankan professionals across various sectors.
The training program was organized by the Government of India and hosted by the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management (SVPISTM) in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, one of India’s leading centres for textile education and innovation.
Over the course of the program, participants engaged in a comprehensive series of modules that covered the entire textile value chain, including advanced weaving techniques, modern design and digital technologies, product development, textile marketing strategies and leadership and industry management.
The sessions were designed to enhance hands-on expertise, build competitiveness, and introduce participants to evolving global trends in textile production and design.
In addition to classroom-based learning, the delegation undertook site visits to textile institutions, factories, design studios, and retail hubs, giving them firsthand exposure to India’s modern textile ecosystem. These visits enabled craftsmen to observe cutting-edge production technologies, innovation-driven design processes, and efficient supply chain operations.
Beyond technical learning, the program served as a platform to strengthen institutional collaboration between the two countries. Participants gained valuable insight into India’s advancements in textile innovation, offering opportunities for future partnerships and knowledge exchange.
