COLOMBO – Twenty two Sri Lanka students who received fully funded Government of India scholarships to study Hindi, left for India earlier this week, after a brief interaction with the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Gopal Baglay on Tuesday (29).
The students, selected from across the country, will undertake a nine- month diploma course at the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan (Central Institute of Hindi), Agra, Uttar Pradesh. They will join students from 25 countries, who are all part of the scholarship program, titled ‘Propagation of Hindi Abroad’”.
Baglay during his interaction with the scholarship recipients highlighted the role of Hindi language and literature in strengthening the millennia-old cultural, linguistic, literary, and religious ties between India and Sri Lanka. He also conveyed his best wishes for their stay in India.
Hindi, which is one of the most popular foreign languages in Sri Lanka, is being taught in almost 80 institutions, including renowned schools and Universities of Sri Lanka.
The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, the cultural arm of the High Commission of India, has been coordinating the Hindi language scholarship since 2011. In the last 12 years, 160 students from Sri Lanka have been awarded scholarship under the Propagation of Hindi Abroad’ program. The current batch of 22 is the highest number of students selected from Sri Lanka.
