COLOMBO – The High Commission of Pakistan and the Pakistani community in Sri Lanka celebrated the country’s 74th anniversary of independence with a colourful ceremony at the High Commission’s premises in Colombo, on Friday (14).
The Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan in Sri Lanka, Tanvir Ahmad hoisted the national flag, while Asmma Kamal, Commercial Secretary, read out the message of the President, Dr. Arif Alvi and Ayesha Abu Bakr Fahad, Second Secretary (Political), read out the message of the Prime Minister, Imran Khan.
Dr. Alvi in his message noted that unlike in the past, Independence Day this year was being celebrated in extraordinarily difficult times as the entire world has been affected by the novel coronavirus which has brought enormous challenges. “But we have seen that our resilient nation has overcome them with a brilliant strategy of smart lock down,” the message read.
Prime Minister Imran Khan in his message said, “While we celebrate this Independence Day, our hearts are profoundly grieved by the sufferings of our brethren in IIOJK who are facing military siege for the past one year. We stand firmly behind our Kashmiri brethren in their struggle for their right to self-determination. We will continue to raise the voice of the helpless Kashmiris at all available forums. We will continue to sensitize the international community of grave human rights violations in IIOJK and the threats to peace and security of the region.”
Acting High Commissioner, Tanvir Ahmad paid tribute to the forefathers of the nation who faced insurmountable challenges and made unparalleled sacrifices towards achieving the dream of Pakistan. He reiterated that all Pakistanis now had the responsibility of working towards realizing the dreams of its founders. He also notes that to achieve the objective, there should be good relations, harmony and brotherhood among all strata of society.
On Sri Lanka-Pakistan relations, he said Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with Sri Lanka, which are based on mutual respect, understanding and close cooperation. He also said Pakistan has always extended unconditional support to Sri Lanka at all fora and continues to do so, especially with regard to its national security and territorial integrity.
The event was well-attended by member of the Pakistani community in Sri Lanka, officials and families of the High Commission, local dignitaries, journalists and friends of Pakistan.
