COLOMBO – Humane policing, policing for women and children, community outreach, policing during stressful times and leveraging intelligence for effective policing, were some of the topics discussed at a two-day webinar on ‘Policing During Pandemic Times’, held on August 10 and 11.
Ten police officers from Sri Lanka were among the 97 participants from 25 countries attending the event, part of the series of Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (e-ITEC) webinars conducted by the Ministry of External Affairs, India for ITEC partner countries.
The webinar was organized by Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), New Delhi, and was inaugurated by G. Kishan Reddy, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Government of India. It was addressed by retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officials and covered a number of topics related to policing including humane policing, policing for women and children, community outreach, policing during stressful times and leveraging intelligence for effective policing.
Among the police officials from Sri Lanka were V.G.D. AyasaKarunaratne, Deputy Inspector General of Police Ampara; A.L.U.N. Priyantha Liyanage, SSP; and K. T. Nimila De Silva, ASP. The Indian High Commission in a statement issued on Wednesday (12), said it appreciated the enthusiastic participation of Sri Lankan officials in e-ITEC in the areas of health, good governance and policing.
It also noted that Major General H. J. S. Gunawardena, Chief of Staff, Sri Lanka Army had recently participated in the ‘COVID-19 – Good Governance Practices in a Pandemic’, held on June 18 and 19 at the National Centre for Good Governance, Mussoorie and shared Sri Lanka’s experience and best practices for controlling the pandemic.
