COLOMBO – India on Monday (25) handed over a fleet of 134 single-cab vehicles to the Sri Lanka Police under a grant assistance program worth 300 million Sri Lankan rupees aimed at strengthening law enforcement and emergency response capabilities.
The vehicles were formally handed over by Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha during a ceremony at the Presidential Secretariat attended by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
According to a statement from the Indian High Commission in Colombo, the vehicles are expected to improve transportation facilities for police personnel, enhance operational efficiency and reduce response times, particularly in difficult terrain, with the broader objective of strengthening law and order and improving public safety.
A Memorandum of Understanding for the supply of the vehicles was signed in January 2025, following a request by the Sri Lanka Police.
The initiative was among several development cooperation measures launched after President Dissanayake’s state visit to India in December 2024, during which he and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to expand people-centric development cooperation across key sectors.
The statement said the vehicle project also aligned with the objectives of President Dissanayake’s ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ mission launched in January 2025, particularly efforts related to road safety, maintaining public order and providing timely assistance to citizens in distress.
The ceremony was attended by Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister K. M. Ananda Wijepala, Deputy Minister Sunil Watagala, ministry officials and senior police officers, including Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya.
