COLOMBO –The High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha and Secretary together with the Secretary, Ministry of Rural and Urban Development, Housing and Construction, A.M.P.M.B. Atapattu, inaugurated the Thiththavelkiwla Model Village in Monaragala on Monday (4), and handed over 24 houses to the beneficiary families.
The Model Village Housing Project, which encompasses housing facilities for 600 low-income families of in all 25 districts in Sri Lanka, is being implemented by the Ministry of Rural and Urban Development, Housing and Construction of Sri Lanka with grant support from the Government of India.
The project will see 24 houses built in each model village for families selected by the District Housing Committees.
A Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of India and the Government of Sri Lanka was signed for the project in October 2017.
A statement from the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said model villages under the project have earlier been inaugurated and handed over in 11 districts namely Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Jaffna, Kandy, Gampaha, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Matale, Puttalam, Colombo and Trincomalee.
It said the project progress was over 96 % and the remaining model villages are expected to be inaugurated and handed over to the beneficiaries soon.
District Secretary, Monaragala; Chairman, National Housing Development Authority; officials from the Ministry of Rural and Urban Development, Housing and Construction of Sri Lanka, Uva Provincial Council and Monaragala District Administration also attended Monday’s inauguration and handover ceremony.
