India signs agreements with SEC, NHDA to construct 10,000 houses in plantation areas
COLOMBO – The High Commission of India in Colombo on Tuesday (28) signed two significant agreements with the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) and State Engineering Corporation (SEC) for the construction of 10,000 houses in plantation areas under Phase-IV of the Indian Housing Project.
The two agreements with the implementing agencies are aimed at the early rollout of construction of the houses across 11 districts and six provinces in Sri Lanka.
Counsellor and Head of Development Cooperation Wing, Eldos Mathew Punnoose, Chairman of SEC, Rathnasiri Kalupahana, and General Manager, NHDA, Kankanamalage Ajantha Janaka were the signatories to the two agreements.
A statement from the Indian High Commission noting that the overall commitment of the Government of India under the Indian Housing Project currently stands at 60,000 houses, said that 46,000 houses had been completed in Northern and Eastern Provinces in the first two phases, and the third phase for the construction of 4000 houses in plantation areas was nearing completion.
The statement also noted that housing receives focused attention in India’s people-centric development cooperation partnership with Sri Lanka and that beyond the Indian Housing Project, 2400 houses are being built across the 25 Districts of Sri Lanka under different projects.
It also said India’s development cooperation portfolio stands at around US$ 5 billion, with close to US$ 600 million being in grants.
