18 Sri Lankan students get scholarships to study Hindi in India
COLOMBO – Eighteen Sri Lankan students from across the country who had been selected for a Government of India scholarship to study Hindi in India for one year, left for India last week. The Indian High Commission in Colombo said on Tuesday (20), the students had interacted with High Commissioner Gopal Baglay before their departure.
The High Commission said Baglay had highlighted the role Hindi language and literature had played in strengthening the millennia-old cultural, linguistic, literary, and religious ties between India and Sri Lanka. He had also conveyed his best wishes for their stay in India.
The scholarship will cover the cost of travel to India, academic fees and local hospitality for a one year course at the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan (KHS) or Central Institute of Hindi, Agra, the High Commission said, adding that the expenses will be borne by the Government of India.
Hindi, one of the most popular foreign languages in Sri Lanka, is being taught in almost 80 institutions, including renowned schools and Universities of Sri Lanka.
