COLOMBO – The body of a 16-year-old domestic aide, who died of third-degree burn injuries on July 15, while employed at former minister Rishad Bathiudeen’s residence, is to be exhumed on Friday (30). Police Spokesman SDIG Ajith Rohana said a three-member panel appointed to conduct the second post-mortem into the death, will visit the Dayagama area, where the teen is buried, with several other experts, to carry out the exhumation and the post-mortem.
Police hunt for underage domestic workers in Colombo
COLOMBO – Police conducted search operations for underage domestic workers in the residential areas of Colpetty (Colombo 3) and Modara, Mattakkuliya, on Tuesday (27). Police Spokesman, Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the special operation was conducted based on intelligence information received and that over 30 places were inspected in both areas. He said similar operations were conducted in other parts of Colombo on Wednesday (28).
He urged the public to call 0112433333 if they have any information on underage domestic workers in their areas.
UK based Lankan blackmails online girlfriend, demands Rs 1.7 million ransom
COLOMBO – A UK-based Sri Lankan has demanded Rs 1.7 million in ransom from a 33-year-old woman with whom he had an online affair, threatening to release suggestive photographs of her on social media if she failed to hand over the money. Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the woman had filed a complaint with the Police Women and Children’s Bureau, after agreeing to pay the money. He said two suspects from Slave Island in Colombo were arrested when they came to collect the money at a location at Union Place.
University teachers withdraw from online lectures
COLOMBO – University teachers affiliated with the Federation of University Teachers Associations (FUTA), withdrew from online teaching activities on Wednesday (28) in protest against the controversial Kotelawala National Defence University Bill, which they claimed would lead to privatization of free education. FUTA said university teachers will refrain from conducting online lectures from Wednesday onwards. Meanwhile, the National Organizations Collective said the Kotelawala National Defence University Bill should be opposed, even with amendments. All State universities remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, with lectures being conducted via online platforms.
