President reviews 2026 energy projects, sets priorities for 2027 Budget
COLOMBO – President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Wednesday(15) chaired a high-level review of the Ministry of Energy’s 2026 budget implementation and outlined priorities for the 2027 budget, with a focus on accelerating renewable energy initiatives, strengthening power infrastructure and completing key fuel-sector projects.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Secretariat, reviewed the progress of projects funded under the 2026 budget, assessed those expected to be completed this year and discussed funding requirements for next year’s programs.
During the meeting, the President sought an update on the Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES) project being implemented in the islands of Neduntheevu (Delft), Analaitivu and Nainativu, and instructed officials to prioritize transforming the islands into green energy hubs through expanded renewable energy development.
Discussions also focused on Japanese-funded energy projects that were suspended during Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, with officials reviewing the financial requirements needed to restart the projects in 2027.
The President also reviewed progress on several major electricity infrastructure projects, including the second 220 kV underground transmission line from Kolonnawa to the Colombo Port, the Sampur–Kappalthurai power transmission development project, the proposed Habarana–Kappalthurai power transmission project under the Ceylon Electricity Authority Transmission Expansion Project (CEATP), the installation of a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) at the Padukka 220 kV Grid Substation, rooftop solar power generation initiatives and the Virtual Net Metering Project.
The meeting further examined the status of 14 major fuel-sector projects currently under implementation. These include the construction of six new oil storage tanks, expansion of fuel infrastructure, rehabilitation of existing storage tanks at Kolonnawa oil storage complex and upgrades to fuel filling facilities in Zone 7 of the complex, and the construction of two additional tanks at the Muthurajawela fuel storage complex.
President Dissanayake stressed the importance of completing all energy and fuel infrastructure projects within the stipulated timelines to strengthen the country’s energy security and ensure that the public receives the full benefits of the investments.
