COLOMBO – Russia’s Red Wings will operate charter flights to Mattala airport from December 28, 2022, Sri Lanka’s embassy in Moscow said.
“Initially Red Wings will operate charter services to Sri Lanka twice a week in partnership with leading tour operators in Russia and, discussions are underway to operate regular flights afterwards,” the embassy said in a statement.
It also noted that as Russian Federation could be regarded as an important tourist traffic source to Sri Lanka at this trying time, the flight operation will be of vital importance to revitalize the tourism industry of the country.
The statement elaborated that the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Janitha A. Liyanage, and a team of officials had met the Commercial Director of Red Wings Air Company Tretyakov and Head of Analytical Department Marina Buzina to discuss final formalities.
Russia was the main source of tourists in December 2022. Up to December 20, 10,870 Russian tourists had visited Sri Lanka ahead of 8,865 from India, 4,743 from UK and 3,130 from Germany.
