COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said he had requested India to add gas to a proposed oil pipeline to connect the two South Asian neighbors.
“A proposal by Indian Oil Corporation(IOC) for an Oil distribution pipeline connecting Nagapattinam, Trincomalee and Colombo was discussed yesterday,” Wijesekera said in a twitter.com message.
“I requested them to look at a two-way oil & gas pipeline…”
The request was made considering a development plan for a tank farm in Trincomalee, expected refinery development, oil and gas exploration, connections to domestic LPG terminals that will target regional markets and to enable energy requirement of the two countries, he said.
“Project feasibility, technical requirements will be assessed before finalization of the project scope for approval,” Wijesekera said.
Officials of Indian High Commision, Ministry of Power & Energy, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Ltd, Petroleum Development Authority of Sri Lanka, Indian Oil Corporation and Lanka IOC were in the meeting.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe is due to visit India shortly, where energy connectivity would be one of the areas discussed, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry told Sri Lanka’s foreign correspondents earlier this week. – EconomyNext
