38 injured as two private buses collide in Matara
COLOMBO – At least 38 passengers were injured after two private buses collided head-on in Sri Lanka’s southern Matara district on Friday (26) morning, police said.
The accident occurred at around 7.45 a.m. on Talalla Vajirawansha Mawatha along the Matara–Tangalle Road, involving a private bus travelling from Galle to Ampara and another operating on the Tangalle–Matara route.
Police said 25 injured passengers were admitted to the Matara General Hospital, while 13 others were taken to the Batheegama District Hospital for treatment.
The collision temporarily disrupted traffic on the main Matara–Tangalle road as authorities worked to clear the area.
Bus accidents remain a recurring concern in Sri Lanka, with crashes involving private and public transport buses frequently reported across the island. Authorities have repeatedly pointed to factors including reckless driving, speeding, driver fatigue, poor road discipline, and mechanical failures as contributing to road accidents.
The latest incident comes amid continued efforts by authorities to reduce road fatalities and improve safety standards in public transportation.
