COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers had cleared the borrowing of US$ 150 million from the Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) to buy vaccines and boost refrigeration and transport facilities, the state information office said.
The Sri Lankan government is expected to contribute US$ 11.85 million to the project, taking the total cost of a Responsive COVID-19 Vaccines for Recovery Project to US$ 161.85 million.
ADB’s Ordinary Capital Resources Fund would give US$ 66 million and US$ 84 million dollars would come from the Asia Pacific Vaccine Access Facility.
The money will be used to cover the cost of the vaccination, vaccine-related monitoring systems, refrigerated transport facility, and improving clinical waste management
Some vaccines require ultra-cold freezers operating around -50 or -70 centigrade for storage.
