Yoshitha’s money laundering appeal set for hearing
COLOMBO – The Court of Appeal on Wednesday (3) granted leave to proceed with a revision application filed by Yoshitha Rajapaksa, challenging a Colombo High Court order that allowed a conspiracy charge against him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act to move forward.
A bench of Appeal Court judges fixed the application for hearing on June 16 after hearing extensive submissions from both parties and conducting a detailed review of the matter.
The application seeks to overturn a previous ruling by the Colombo High Court, which held that the conspiracy charge pending against Rajapaksa could proceed to trial.
Rajapaksa, the son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has argued that the High Court’s order is contrary to law and has requested the Court of Appeal to set it aside and declare it invalid.
The appeal court considered the matter at length before deciding to grant leave for the application to be heard on its merits.
Yoshitha Rajapaksa was present in court when the application was taken up for consideration.
The case relates to proceedings instituted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, with the High Court having previously ruled that the conspiracy charge against Rajapaksa was legally sustainable and could proceed.
