COLOMBO – The Police Headquarters has introduced a mandatory firearm inspection and certification process for private security firearm permit holders as part of the 2026 permit renewal framework.
Under the new requirement, permit holders must present their firearms at the nearest police station once six months have elapsed since the issuance or renewal of their permit. Police officers will inspect the weapon to verify its operational condition and confirm that the firearm’s serial number corresponds with the details recorded on the permit.
Following the inspection, police will issue a certificate confirming the firearm’s functionality and identification details, which will form part of the permit holder’s compliance requirements.
Police said the inspections will thereafter be conducted every six months for all firearms held under private security permits.
The directive has been issued by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), who has instructed senior police officers and officers-in-charge of police stations nationwide to carry out the inspections, issue the necessary certificates and take appropriate action where irregularities are detected.
Accordingly, all private security firearm permit holders have been advised to submit their firearms to the nearest police station for testing and serial-number verification once six months have passed after the renewal of their 2026 permits.
