COLOMBO – A nationwide special police operation targeting organized crime and narcotics has led to the arrest of 589 individuals, including 24 identified as having direct links to major criminal networks.
The district-level search and suppression operation was conducted across all regional police divisions on Tuesday (26) under the direct instructions of the Inspector General of Police, according to the Police Media Division.
During the coordinated sweep, police detained 27,432 individuals for checks and questioning as part of intensified enforcement efforts aimed at combating serious crime and drug-related activity.
Authorities said 24 of those detained were identified as principal suspects connected to organized criminal operations and were formally arrested. A further 589 individuals were taken into custody on various charges.
Police also executed a large number of outstanding court warrants during the operation. Officials said 171 suspects who had been evading arrest were apprehended under pending warrants, while another 278 individuals were arrested on warrants specifying court appearance dates.
Traffic enforcement also formed a major component of the operation. Police arrested 80 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol and 106 for dangerous or negligent driving.
In addition, legal action has been initiated against 4,683 individuals for various traffic offences detected during the island-wide operation, police said.
The Police Media Division stated that the coordinated crackdown was aimed at disrupting organized criminal activity, curbing narcotics distribution, and strengthening public safety through sustained intelligence-led operations.
