COLOMBO – The Rotaract Club of APIIT has launched Project Anudiriya, a humanitarian initiative focused on supporting individuals with vision and hearing impairments, particularly those from underprivileged communities with limited access to healthcare services.
Implemented under the club’s Community Service Avenue, the initiative aims to improve access, dignity, and opportunity for individuals affected by sensory impairments through awareness, early detection, and direct intervention. The project addresses a growing concern across many communities in Sri Lanka, where vision and hearing conditions often remain undiagnosed due to financial limitations and lack of awareness.
For children especially, untreated sensory impairments can lead to learning difficulties, social isolation, and reduced long-term opportunities. Organizers state that many of these conditions are manageable or preventable when identified early, making timely screenings and support essential.
A major component of Project Anudiriya is its collaboration with WISH Foundation and Wickramarachchi Opticians. Through this partnership, beneficiaries are provided with free professional vision and hearing screenings, while also gaining access to trusted healthcare expertise and long-term support services.
The initiative follows a structured multi-phase approach. The first phase focused on awareness and inclusivity through a Sign Language Workshop conducted for students at APIIT Sri Lanka, encouraging better understanding and engagement with the deaf community.
The second phase, which took place on May 9, 2026 at the Nisansala Special Training Centre, involved a large-scale vision and hearing screening program targeting nearly 300 children with special needs and individuals requiring medical support. Conducted with professional medical assistance, the screenings aimed to identify undiagnosed conditions and assess beneficiaries for further care.
Following the screenings, the project moved into its final support phase, where selected beneficiaries identified through the program receive essential assistive devices including spectacles and hearing aids. The organizers confirmed that the initiative has already identified children in urgent need of hearing aids, with funding and support being directed toward providing these devices.
According to the organizers, Project Anudiriya is not only about healthcare access, but also about creating sustainable and inclusive community impact through awareness, intervention, and continued support. The initiative highlights how youth-led service projects can bridge gaps in healthcare accessibility while delivering measurable and meaningful social impact.
