COLOMBO – Sri Lanka on Saturday (24) recorded its 15th COVID-19 related death, a 56-year-old man who had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the Kulyapitiya Hospital, in the Kurunegala district.
A statement from the Government Department of Information said the deceased, a resident from Kithalawa, Uraliya in Kulyapitiy, had been admitted to the Kulyapitiya Hospital on October 14 to be treated for a heart ailment.
He had then been moved to the intensive care unit of the hospital as his condition took a critical turn two days later, and he been under medical care at the ICU until he passed away Saturday morning. He had been confirmed as COVID-19 positive while at the ICU.
The statement said the deceased had also been suffering from kidney diseases and had died due to complications caused by the diseases.
The death is the second to be recorded after a new and more virulent strain of the virus emerged in a new cluster in Minuwangoda with the apparel factory in the area as the epicentre earlier this month. Since then the cluster has seen sub-clusters in several parts of the country, with a number of cases also reported in Kulyapitiya. As of Saturday the Minuwangoda cluster has recorded 3,682 cases.
