Sri Lanka seeks national policy, new authority to protect central highlands
COLOMBO – A lack of coordination between institutions responsible for construction, land, agriculture, livestock, and conservation in Sri Lanka’s central highlands has made recovery after Cyclone Ditwah difficult, President Anura Dissanayake said, calling for a ‘new integrated framework’.
Speaking at a meeting with representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and government and private sector institutions, he said efforts were underway to establish a new integrated framework, bringing together all relevant parties to swiftly safeguard and rebuild the Central Highlands.
The discussion, held at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, stressed the need for a national policy to secure the Central Highlands.
“The discussion also addressed the need for an Authority empowered under the relevant legislation to oversee these activities, and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake instructed officials to expedite the implementation,” the President’s Media Division said in a statement, noting that ADB and UNDP representatives had pointed out the need to maintain a dedicated financial fund for these initiatives.
