India commits US$450 mn to Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah
COLOMBO – India has committed 450 million dollars to Sri Lanka for Cyclone Ditwah recovery, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in Colombo after meeting President Anura Dissanayake as special envoy from the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India was the first to respond to the Ditwah disaster, providing relief supplies, helicopters, medical support and also Bailey Bridges to restore road links.
“Recognizing the urgency of rebuilding, Prime Minister Modi directed that we now engage with the Sri Lankan government to address their priorities in that regard,” Jaishankar said, noting that the assistance package that has been proposed is worth 450 million US dollars.
“It will include 350 million dollars of concessional lines of credit and 100 million dollars of grants,” Jaishankar said, explaining that the assistance will cover rehabilitation and restoration of roads, railway and bridges, reconstruction of houses, health services and rehabilitation of agriculture and working towards better disaster responses and mitigation.
