COLOMBO – Showery weather conditions are expected to persist across Northern and Eastern parts of Sri Lanka over the next 36 hours due to the influence of an easterly wave, the Department of Meteorology said on Wednesday (17).
According to the forecast, intermittent showers are likely in the North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central Provinces, with heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres possible in some locations in the Eastern, Uva, and Central Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa district.
The Meteorology Department also warned of several spells of showers in the Northern and North-Western Provinces, with showers or thundershowers likely to develop in other parts of the island after 1:00 p.m., with fairly heavy rainfall above 50 millimetres at isolated locations.
The Department also warned of strong winds of 40–50 kilometres per hour being likely at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Monaragala districts.
Misty conditions are also forecast during the early morning hours in parts of the Sabaragamuwa, Western, and Central Provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts, potentially affecting visibility.
The Department of Meteorology has urged the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers, particularly in vulnerable areas.
