COLOMBO – A new Mahatma Gandhi Model Village built with Indian grant assistance was inaugurated in Ampara on Wednesday (29), providing permanent housing to 24 low-income families under a joint initiative between Sri Lanka and India.
The project was formally inaugurated by the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, and Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, Dr Susil Ranasinghe. The Model Village Housing Project is being implemented in all 25 districts of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, with grant assistance from the Government of India. A Memorandum of Understanding between the two governments was signed in October 2017 to launch the initiative.
A statement from the Indian High Commission in Colombo noted that the project aims to provide housing facilities for 600 low-income families across the country, with each model village comprising 24 houses for beneficiary families selected by the respective District Housing Committees.
Model villages under this project have already been inaugurated and handed over in 16 districts, including Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Jaffna, Kandy, Gampaha, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Matale, Puttalam, Colombo, Trincomalee, Monaragala, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu, and Ratnapura.
According to the statement, overall progress now stands at nearly 98%, with the remaining model villages expected to be completed and handed over to beneficiaries in the near future.
